The distance between life an death is the legacy established in the undulating journey to accomplish our circle as members of the human family. When death occur and what is left is a mere cadaver fit only for the undertakers resident six feet below the earth, imageries of scenes of our activities becomes the only substance those with breathe can hold unto.
Engineer Abdulkadir A. Kure, former governor of Niger state has paid his dues and now stepped aside to allow the continuum of life, which must go ad-infinitum. Whatever may have opened his path to the other side is of no significance, as his exit heralds a party in Aljanna Firdausi, which we all believe he deserves.
He was a man of many sides, affable, generous, religious and courageous. He combined all these sterling qualities to work as two term governor of Niger state, charting a path for the state. He laid the foundations his immediate successor, Dr. Mu’azu Banagida Aliyu established himself upon. The foundation continues down the trail with incumbent governor, Abubakar Sani Bello.
I am confident that many Nigerlites will remember his character traits, but the most relevant was his generosity, affability and religiosity. It is believed in most circles that his generous attributes touched many lives. I believe he perfected stomach infrastructure long before the Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose introduced his own.
Many people believed he spent more money on welfarism than he would have spent on projects in the state, amongst other achievements. Some however are quick to respond that he is responsible for most rural electrification projects in the state before 2007. But his critics are humbled for his initiative in establishing Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai.
Engineer Kure may have established the state owned university to cushion admission deficit suffered by indigenes of the state in other higher institutions across the country but was more concerned on how it would positively impart on Nigerians irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
His aim of encouraging the advancement of learning regardless of distinction of race, creed, sex, religion, ethnic group, political conviction, has been achieved since the establishment of the institution. Robust pursuit of academic studies, through learning and provision of scholarships for research in all human endeavors are given priority.
One of the core challenges of the North is education. Deficit of higher institutions, limitation of financial resources has largely left the region behind in the affairs of global trend of social, economic achievements – with resultant security implications. The initiative of the university greatly added value to the academic strides achieved by Nigerlites, northerners and indeed Nigerians since 2007.
In the area of religion, Niger witnessed a new beginning under his leadership. A subtle sharia law was introduced to the state where drinking parlors were forbidden. The policy certainly affected some Nigerlites negatively, but was welcomed by most religious clerics as an instructive move towards curtailing misguided youths from brinks of alcoholism and crime.
Some people opined that Niger state, as one of the contiguous states to Abuja would have been overran by miscreants, prostitutes if the ban on alcohol and intake of substances was not enforced under the late Kure administration. In the court of religious opinion leader, he will be award a gold medal for religious chastity, social morality in Niger during his eight-year rule.
In the area of affability, his level of accessibility was indeed remarkable for a politician that has attained his leadership height. He was born with a natural smile, which he generously beams under all circumstance. His humility was simply best for humanity, which was backed by a gifted, unending generous smile.
Kure was a leader that saw himself as equal before the lowliest in the society. His simplicity endeared him to many and kept most of his platoon of followers with him until his death. The ocean of tears in Niger state is an eloquent testimony for the loss of one of Niger state finest leader. No wonder the state will observe a public holiday and mourn him for three days.
His membership for his political platform, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) never compromised his loyalty for his dear state presently under the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Not long ago he threw himself in the works towards peaceful negotiations between the incumbent APC government and labor. He availed himself anytime the government needed him for the good of the state.
He may have transmogrified from this terra firma to the spiritual realm, but his memory will remain indelible for many generations to come. He has served God and man well, hence he deserves to be immortalized by Niger state government, he served with sincerity and love. It is indeed elating that his labor of love is not in vain.
