I have lived close to the Kaduna Maximum Prison in Kaduna all my life. Only twice have I been into the prison; once to preach the gospel, the second time as an in mate from 23rd November to 18th December, 2018.
Image may contain: one or more people and beard

Before now, I have always thought everyone who is in prison must either be a killer, a rapist, drug merchants, assassins, armed robbers, or some very very bad person.

I was wrong.

The first day was a bit worrying. 64 in mates in one small room with only one toilet, sick in mates lying on mats and some on tattered clothes and card-boards, coughing, farting, smoking, singing, hoping, discussing all sorts. In my kind of cell, the 'H' line, there are 3 room. All jam-packed with humans, young and old, highs and lows, all for different offenses.

The rooms are without windows (despite the heat or cold), the floors are bare, stinking to high heavens. In mates take turns in 5s to go out per day. Except for those who will perform tasks; fetch water that will be poured in drums through the iron doors via a sack. Same routine for food in large quantity. Then those who will attend church programs are also allowed out just for that time.

The prison is like a man who owns a pen. He opens the 'animals' once it's sun rise and lock them back in once the sun sets.

Opening times; 7am to 1:30pm, when they ring the bell stationed at the center of the yard, for in mates to go back in their various cells. With the exception of those in the condemned cells, SC and those on 'essential duties'. At 3:30pm, the bell will ring again for the inmates who made it out from various cells to come out again until 5pm when the last is rung for the day for a close down until the following day. It is a daily routine.

I spent a night at the 'H' line, drank water all day from 1pm that I 'paid' for the Special Cell' at 5pm when I was relocated. That SC was where other men like James Ibori, Ramalan Yero, Luka Biniat, John Fulani and others spent time while at 'Country No Vex'.

At the SC, there are 3 rooms, hostel bunks with 6-spring mattresses, mosquito nets, one tiny toilet-bathroom, and toilet shared by 4-10 in mates depending on the number in a room. There is a compound with a gate and close to the kitchen, behind the 'G' line (where armed robbers are locked up) and facing the football field-where we are daily baptized with smoke from wet woods that made up cry. The SC share the same fence with the chapel-where we are woken daily with heavenly songs, to remind us that 'God dey!'

I settled in quickly, observed my environment carefully, picked my friends and 'foes'. Most were condemned criminals; who despite their situation encouraged me. Some are even more knowledgeable in law than some lawyers I know. They can tell you how a case will end. I made 'friends', I watched football, played volleyball and taught them some moves. I played scrabble (I actually made sure I whooped every player, including the wardens high and low and my favorite opponent Mr Collins aka 'Charmo-Charmo') and left a record. In short, "I took the yard and made it mine."

I met and made friends with Shi'as and I must say, "they are a fantastic set of people who are misunderstood. We shared ideas, played, prayed and laughed." Let me say this here, do you know that 90% of the ones I met don't smoke (weed or cigarettes), they smile at you all the time and are educated?!

I met hardened criminals too at the draft board playing ground. Some even discussed how when it's December and its cold, that is when they make money robbing. They laughed about it without any care in the world.

I 'stayed', laughed and discussed with men; one slaughtered his 4 kids because his wife said they are not his. One who shot his wife because according to him, "she dumped me after sponsoring her education". Slept and ate side by side with a young soldier who is not even 30 yet but has fought in the war against BH. His gun went off some years back and the bullet killed a young man and he ended in the AWT section for going to 3 years now, and so many others.

In the prisons, no phones are allowed but some, with special arrangements, do have them. No television, no radio, no books except the holy books, no heater to warm water but 'kpakakpaka' (local stove that use coal). Women are set apart from the men. You won't see cars, lol! But if you want anything, (I mean ANYTHING), it can be arranged.

Misbehave and you will get Oga Aminu's rod and make the back cell. BC is where 'shit' and 'piss' and all sorts pass through. People make the BC daily. The food is terrible! Water comes from borehole at the condemned cell yard. Others are wells. You will be lucky if you do 'self-feeding'-your people will bring you water and food else you eat the 'food' other in mates eat. Gabsa, beans and rice with stones, watery kuka soup, camel meat, et al. The buildings, except for one that was built recently as I hear, have been standing since 1915! The rooms, the walls, the facilities are the same, nothing has changed except probably the prison authorities, and in mates.

In Kaduna prison, you don't dare fall sick or you will die!

Hell, people die there from time to time. Go to the 'hospital' (hic!) and complain that you have malaria, they will hand you panadol and some other drugs you can't tell what they are for. Except if you will contact your family members, who will go buy you the drugs from outside, hand over to the prison authorities, who will dispense the drugs to you in daily doses. Those who make it out are the very sick and those who go for a mental evaluation. Even they pay for their own drugs.

Miraculously, me that break down with malaria from time to time never broke down once in my 25 days there. 'NA GOD!'

My stay at 'Country No Vex' gave me time to sit and think about our country and her leadership. Justice system, the ordinary man, the prisons and its services, the wardens, the in mates and all. Over and above everything, I had time to talk to God in prayers. And God didn't wait forever to answer me; most answers came expressly.

This is just a taste of the pudding. One day, I will put my thoughts down on how I was invited by the Central Intelligence Bureau, how I honored the invite, the allegations, the court proceeding that asked that I be remanded in prison, the visits, the intrigues, the outcry for my release, the bail hearing, the miracles, the attempt to lure my organization to have me sacked, et al. You will read about it all in dues course.

To those who think I was arrested, no, I was not arrested. I walked into the CIB myself in the company of my elder brother. I was not arrested, I was not tortured. In fact, your prayers on the outside made me 'King' on the inside.

Our prisons need a total overhaul! It is not a reform center but a place to make hard criminals more determined to be more dangerous.

When Olufela Anikulapo Kuti sang about our prison, we all danced and laughed without truly listening to learn. Indeed, 'Country No Vex' is inside world. Nigeria is outside world, 'craze world!' They are even more organized in 'Country No Vex' that in Nigeria!

Do you know there are people in prison for over 1-3 years awaiting trial, who are on bail but can't make bail because they cannot raise just #5,000?! Some are kids whose parents and the society failed to guide. Some who are set up. Some who stepped on the wrong foot. Some who can't even explain the reason why they did what they did. Some just need someone to stand for them and nothing more. Some, the judges could easily let go but won't because someone is interested in their case. Some even pay to ensure such people are not just locked down but also made to do hard labor.

Once in a while make time out to visit the prisons. Not all who go there are bad people. You will see when you visit. And as a people, we have to do more to ensure the prisons get reformed and the in mates don't just go on long meaningless sentences and come out with nothing but the idea they went in with and the more deadly ones they acquire while on lock down.

They need drugs, food, soaps, clothes, counseling, mentoring, support, etc. Go see.

Was my time there worth it? Yes! Did I learn something? Yes! They won't let cameras into the cells, they won't let the media get the details. But my lockdown gave me the chance to see, meet and mingle with everyone, hear and be part of a rotten system that should be totally reformed.

Do I regret being there? No, not one bit! I actually am grateful I went there. And

If anyone says to you that they spend billions on in mates and the prisons, tell them I said it is a bloody lie! Not the in mates, not the wardens, not anyone enjoy anything there-it's not like they make it look.

You will read about it (if Jesus tarries) from me and very soon.

.....

SW&SH is a weekly series on here and on Chungai Media. Make time out to read and learn.

I am done, I am gone, I am a ghost!
